Before you start

If two tiles named WPS appear, read the publisher. Only Kingsoft is official. Installers steal file types. Uninstallers forget to give them back.

Set defaults on purpose after every suite change. A Store stub can still offer the Store on every DOCX after you thought WPS was gone.

Steps

  1. Open OS default-apps settings On Windows 11, Settings then Default apps. On Mac, Get Info then Open with. On Linux, use your desktop’s file properties.
  2. Assign DOCX, XLSX, PPTX Pick Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation, or Microsoft Word on purpose. Apply to all files of that type if the OS offers it.
  3. Assign PDF separately PDF can stay in a browser or a dedicated reader. Do not let a mystery PDF app from a search ad win.
  4. Test with a disposable file Create a new DOCX, close it, double-click. Confirm the window you expected.
  5. Revisit after uninstall Store stubs can still hijack. See the after-uninstall guide.
